There's no way I can find to get them to move down to the next system.
They just continue to extend on the same one.
Perhaps I should specify that I don't use the "smart" variety of word
extensions. But even the "smart" ones don't move down - I just tried them.

It sounds as if you'll simply have to use smartshapes lines for the
continuation of the lines on the next system.
