You can do this painlessly by putting part of the material before
the content with the rests into another layer. The word extensions
will then continue indefinitely until they are cleared as if it is
one endless melisma. The only tweaking will be to remove them where
you don't need them to continue. Should be pretty easy.

Since they often extend over a system break, there is no handle to
edit them. So the only way I've found is to replace the rests with
real notes and then change them back once the extensions are there.
