What I do (FINWin) is enter all lyrics and assign them normally then go back to
such passages, and in page view, using the "Type into score" menu item for
Lyric tool, I enter an alt-0160 at the first rest needing a word extension.

Then I switch to the "Edit word extensions" menu item and, clicking on the
rest, drag the extension rightward first, then use adjust syllables tool to
move it leftward as needed.

Even it this requires a few steps, is still easier than making/placing/spacing
smartshape lines. This is one of the very last steps I take when finishing a
score since changing formatting afterwards could require even more tweaking.

There's no way I can find to get them to move down to the next system. They
just continue to extend on the same one.

Perhaps I should specify that I don't use the "smart" variety of word
extensions. But even the "smart" ones don't move down - I just tried them.

  Thanks for the suggestion, nevertheless.
