Thanks, Noel. That was indeed my first guess, that is, having named them by means other than the staff attributes dialog. But no, the square boxes next to the names appear only when the Staff Tool is selected. I also double clicked the word "flute" with the selection tool to make sure, and that activated the Staff Tool, presenting, as expected, the tiny square boxes next to the three staff names. However, selecting the top "flute" text by clicking on the square, selects it plus staff 2 "flute" text (as if I shift-clicked the latter), and vice-versa. If I drag one the other moves together.
I opened the text block editing dialog box (thanks, I had never done so before) No occurrences of both flute and letters a or b in one text block. I found the word "flute", alone and only once, at the beginning; as for "a", "b", and "c", these were the last three.
