The usual thing to do is to up the contrast and brightness simultaneously. This will eliminate the more grayish parts of the scan, but that can also mean losing important detail (e.g., anti- aliased text is smoothly shaped because it uses gray-scales for rounding off what would otherwise be sharp edges). You'd have to experiment, but likely you can get rid of a large percentage of the marks with contrast/brightness adjustments and then clean out the rest manually as has already been suggested. -- David W.
