Adam,
The GPO solo strings, especially violin seem to have been made for
slow, legato playing. My difficulty with them besides that is that
there is no way of making them play non vibrato, and their vibrato is
always the same speed and depth. In a string quartet in homorhythmic
textures all the strings are playing with vibrato that is in sync and
too wide for most contemporary music.
