This is precisely what I do myself in Finale. When writing in breath marks on 
manuscript it is much clearer and easier to use a tick so it makes sense to use 
the same information on the digital version. Quite often a sixteenth note not 
critical for the harmony will be bracketed off and sacrificed to enable a quick 
breath to be taken, but that information does not need to be transferred to 
Finale.

In didactic material for oboists a small circle above the staff is sometimes 
used to remind the young oboe player to breathe _out_ before taking a breath! 
This notation is definitely not needed for other wind players.
