Trying to work this out.  So how does it happen that no playback is involved, 
the piano sound as controlled by the MIDI Keyboard starts at a normal volume, 
then a few notes later decides to drop to nearly nothing.  No playback signal - 
nothing I can think of that would do this.  And I haven’t touched the volume 
slider on the keyboard.  Sliding the volume up restores the volume momentarily, 
but it doesn’t stick.

Same here, but that doesn’t seem to be the problem either.

 A new keyboard changed nothing, to that leads me to believe this is happening 
within Finale, or the Aria player.

I will replace the preferences the morning and see if that changes anything.
