Well, I should have done this first!   I replaced the preferences file and now 
the problem is gone.  Corrupt preferences the culprit once again, or at least 
so I hope.  If the cure lasts a while, I’ll be happy.

Meanwhile, thanks Christopher and Dennis for thinking about this.
