I am very much a hobbyist, and not an expert by any means. I have had this sort of thing happen many times, and have spent hours on the phone with tech support. Usually it comes down to trashing the preferences file and various things like that. It doesn't always fix the problem, and the support people seem to be just as flummoxed as the rest of us...
