Thanks for the feedback, folks. I_think I tried clearing out the MIDI data and it didn't help, but I'll give it another whirl if (more likely when) it happens again. The restarting is a new idea - will definitely give that a try.
Never even used the tempo tool, may definitely try that with one file that just increased one (very important) measure's tempo by about 40%, for no apparent reason.
