Weird.  Did you set up your .xinitrc so it writes kde's startup to a
file?  If not, would you do so, and send me the output (privately, no
point in blatting that much to the list)?

You should be able to change your .xinitrc so the startkde line is
something like:

    /sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1

...and then e-mail me the /tmp/kde.log file.

That really shouldn't be happening -- I can't imagine a reason that
would make it work in fullscreen and not rootless...
