Readline is a standard GNU library, according to the description, so I
don't believe that it's specific to fink.  How did you install R? 

I had an idea on how you could have Virex 7.2 and fink simultaneously. 
If you install fink from source, you can make it use a different
directory than /sw .  Then you could make a symbolic link from the
fink-installed readline dylib to where R thinks it should be.

Another option that's available is that R is available under fink.
