has anyone succeeded installing xemacs through fink commander?
I haven't tried with FinkCommander, but from the command line, yes. I am using xemacs all the time.
Installing the package xeemacs-sumo-p does not seem to work ("xemacs"
This is a misunderstanding. The package description of xemacs-sumo says "All the xemacs packages", but this is "packages" in the sense of xemacs, not in the sense of Fink. It does not install xemacs itself, it only installs every conceivable add-on for xemacs.
results in "unknown command"), and the package xemacs gives a splash screen, but it freezes up immediately with error messages like:
xemacs: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 55 (X_CreateGC) Serial number of failed request: 1953 Current serial number in output stream: 1978
is this familiar to anyone?
It is familiar, unfortunately, from a long thread with one guy who seems to get this all the time, but no one was able to help him. He probably bought a PC in the end ;-). The only time I got something similar was when I had updated my X11 installation and rebuilt xemacs, but did not rebuilt xaw3d. After rebuilding xaw3d it disappeared.
