Check in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/ and see what files are there. If the contents don't look something like

ldx3:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo hansen$ ls
encodings.dir font0583.spd font0649.spd fonts.dir
font0419.spd font0611.spd font0709.spd fonts.scale
font0582.spd font0648.spd font0710.spd

then you need to reinstall whatever package they came from--I don't recall, since I'm using the newer xfree86 package. Anyway, you should be able to find out by running

dpkg -S /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo

When I look at the contents of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts I do see a Speedo,
Type1, and CID directories do exist. I don't see any files in any sub-
directories with a name or variation of "fixed".

I'll keep poking around. Any thoughts on what to do next would be
appreciated!

Try "startx -- -rootless" instead.
