Thank you for your reply.  FYI, the package containing the directory below
is xfree86-base.  I reinstalled it and XDarwin perked up.  XDarwin.app and
startx -- -rootless both produce the desired results.

The final issue is OroborOSX 0.9.  It's the classic "I had this working
before and I didn't do anything to it situation."  I have looked in 
/var/log/system.log and see an XDarwin.crash.log being mentioned when I
try starting OroborOSX.  The log says:

It makes me wonder if I shouldn't go ahead and reinstall all the XFree86
packages.  I think I'm pretty close to being done with this.  I'll try
the reinstall and see if that helps.  It would help if I knew what
OroborOSX was trying to locate.  Thank you in advance for any further
advice you (or others) can give!
