Well, I attempted to install the xdvi package this morning, and that failed as 
well.  This URL (http://depasquale.tcnj.edu/~depasqua/xdvi0329.txt) will take 
you to the full install output.  Notable lines of issue include:

checking host system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.3.0
checking where the main texmf tree is located... /sw/share/texmf
creating ./config.status
creating Makefile
 perl -pi -e 's|\-ldl||g' texk/xdvik/Makefile
Can't open texk/xdvik/Makefile: No such file or directory.
echo "Removing readlink, which is supplied in the debianutils package ..."
Removing readlink, which is supplied in the debianutils package ...
 rm -f /sw/src/root-tetex-2.0.2-34/sw/bin/readlink
 rm -f /sw/src/root-tetex-2.0.2-34/sw/share/man/man1/readlink.1

 mv /sw/src/root-tetex-2.0.2-34/sw/bin/xdvi

There must be an earlier error. Further up in the output, you should see 
a line

/usr/bin/install -c -p ./xdvi-sh /sw/src/root-tetex-2.0.2-34.1/sw/bin/xdvi

Is there anything suspicious near that line?
