start with the following file to create your ~/.xinitrc /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

This advice is frequently given, but it is bogus. Almost everything in the file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is completely superfluous in most situations. It only serves to give the false impression that this is a very complicated business.

Just make a *new* file containing the important lines, like it you said

        quartz-wm --only-proxy &
        source /sw/bin/init.sh
        export KDEWM=kwin
        /sw/bin/startkde > tmp/kde.log 2>&1

You don't need anything else.

If you really want to use ~/.Xresources or ~/.Xmodmap files, then just add the corresponding lines to your ~/.xinitrc (at the beginning)

  xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap
  xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xresources
