for myself, i like to keep things as simple as possible. from my basic understanding, if all that you do is install fink, it does not touch or modify anything apple related. fink is completely contained in /sw i would try this first (with apple's X11) and see if KDE works. if not, then try the other window managers, and see what does work with apple's X11. for the other window managers, i only know the magic words to install and then start gnome.
