Dr H:
I aoplogize if my email woke you up, sorry. And, I appreciate the
information you are providing in terms of what's needed and what isn't.
However, my question about how to "use" a fink installed application does
not appear to have been addressed, yet. What would be a sample command to
type into X11 to get one of the fink installed unix apps to do what it
does? E.g., I have open office, which needs X11 to run, when I click on the
OO icon X11 opens a window and a couple of mnutes later OO opens and lets me
do stuff. So far I haven't found how to get any of the FC installed apps to
do anything beyond "man" . . . and perhaps the packages that FC installs are
not enough to actually do anything? I saw your comment about "not all apps
run" but what apps do or what would be a fairly fast sample command to set
up that running app and then "run" it????
Is there a sample command that you can show me that can "launch" an app or a
sample package to install that will "do" something? Given that if I erase
the aes51 file and try to finish installing sawfish, if that goes well, will
I be able to type "sawfish" in an X11 or Terminal window and sawfish will do
something? Or is all this beyond doing something? it's just about data
acquisition, having the data in my computer?
FC says I have 240 apps installed now, everything is more or less "up to
date" as far as a PPC 10.4.11 unit can be; is there a general app command
that I can type to "use" a Unix app? That is my simple question; in other
words, what package do I need to have to be able to then "use" it? Out of
the 240 apps which one might "open" and run? It looks like the entire
Gnome package might take days to install?? would there be something faster
to just give me a sample of what can be done with Unix?? And, then, how to
"start" up the app?? Thanks very kindly.
