Or perhaps, like NetBSDs use usr/pkg we can use /usr/fink

Anyway, usr/local/fink is definitely *not* a good idea :
/sw
/usr/local
/usr/pkg
/opt
are all "shadow trees"

While /usr/local/fink would be a tree within a tree. A mess.

I vote for /usr/fink, if one day the installer gives the user a choice.
