Hi.
I'm have problems with Appletalk, which, it has been suggested, might
be related to my fink installation. In particular, when I connect my
IBook and my TiBook with a crossover ethernet cable, I should be able
to use Appletalk thru Finder's "Connect to Server" menu item to
connect from one to the other. Unfortunately, after entering the
username and password I get an authentication error stating, rather
ambiguously, that either the password is wrong, or the user is
unknown. Of course, the usernames and passwords I used were valid,
since I can log in with them. I took my IBook and my TiBook to the
Apple Store, and after an hour of fiddling and various tests, the
"Genius" at the Genius Bar concluded somewhat tentatively that my
authentication problem had something to do with all the extra users
("News Server", "MySQLDatabase Server", etc.) installed by some fink
package (I forget which one) which is installed on both my computers.
One of his tests was to use each of my computers one at a time to
connect to one of the store computers. He was successfully able to
connect in each case. On the other hand, when attempting to connect
in the other direction, from the store computer to either of my
computers, he failed with the same authentication error I get trying
to connect between my computers. His suggestion was to reinstall OS
X, which I will do. Before going to such an extreme, however, I
wanted to see if anyone on this list might have some suggestions. In
the absence of such advice, I'll unisntall fink on one of my
computers and reinstall the system and see if that computer suddenly
starts permitting connection.
By the way, I'm not really confident in his conclusion, but I thought
I'd post to this list in case other fink users have had this problem.
