That struck me as well, but I don't have alot of knowledge to go on, so I wasn't prepared to argue with him. On the other hand, I still haven't resorted to uninstalling fink and reinstalling my system. localhost:~] ncrocker% niutil -list . /users 11 nobody 12 root 13 daemon 14 unknown 15 www 1227 ncrocker 1231 news 1232 mysql 1233 pgsql 1234 games 1235 canna 1236 postfix [localhost:~] ncrocker% niutil -list . /users | wc -l 12 >> Also, he was somewhat suspicious about whether the fink package >>that installed those users handled it correctly. This is one of the many things about user managment in OS X that I did not know (and, I think, the Apple guy didn't know). I'm pretty much convinced by now that the users installed by passwd aren't the problem. In another post, I mentioned that a few people on Apple's Discussion Forums had mentioned having the same problem as me: authentication problems using appletalk with valid user/password combos. I haven't asked, but what are the odds that these people are all fink users. That suggests that there are other causes for the problem.
