That struck me as well, but I don't have alot of knowledge to go on, 
so I wasn't prepared to argue with him.  On the other hand, I still 
haven't resorted to uninstalling fink and reinstalling my system.

This is one of the many things about user managment in OS X that I 
did not know (and, I think, the Apple guy didn't know).  I'm pretty 
much convinced by now that the users installed by passwd aren't the 
problem.  In another post, I mentioned that a few people on Apple's 
Discussion Forums had mentioned having the same problem as me: 
authentication problems using appletalk with valid user/password 
combos.  I haven't asked, but what are the odds that these people are 
all fink users.  That suggests that there are other causes for the 
problem.
