Thanks for replying.  Near as I could tell, he suspected that the 
authenitication problem was the result of there being "too many" 
users.  Also, he was somewhat suspicious about whether the fink 
package that installed those users handled it correctly.  He was 
absolutely sure that the handling of users by Apple software would be 
done in the correct Unix fashion (which I don't know anything about, 
so I can't evaluate that validity of his belief), so any problems 
associated with users and authentication is the probably the result 
of third party software (i.e. the fink package that installed the 
extra users).  I'm not as sure as he is about that, just on general 
principle.  Apple doesn't need help from third party developers to 
have problems.
