Could have been on the fink-beginners or -devel lists.

No, just remove system-libgl manually.

The problem, if I recall correctly, seems to be that fink doesn't handle 
Conflicts: and Replaces: directives intelligently, like apt-get does, 
for example. If you did the same thing using apt-get (supposing the 
precompiled binaries existed), system-libgl would be removed automatically.
