It looks like system-xfree86 is still in the installed package list, but
all of its files are missing.
If you have installed the fink xfree86-* packages, then try to remove
system-xfree86. Start with "fink remove system-xfree86"

If, on the other hand, you have an external Xwindows installation, like
Apple X11, then you'll need system-xfree86, and will want to use "fink
reinstall system-xfree86"
No, for now I haven't installed Apple's X11, I only want to use Fink's Xfree86 base and rootless (and corresponding shlibs).

But I'm in a sort of Catch-22: If I try 'fink remove system-xfree86' I get:
...
dpkg --remove system-xfree86
dpkg: error processing system-xfree86 (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.

I guess I didn't "switch" to finks packages correctly before,
and if I try 'fink install system-xfree86' I get:

...
Selecting previously deselected package system-xfree86.
dpkg: regarding .../system-xfree86_4.2-5_darwin-powerpc.deb containing system-xfree86:
xfree86-base conflicts with x11
system-xfree86 provides x11 and is to be installed.
dpkg: error processing /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11-system/system- xfree86_4.2-5_darwin-powerpc.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing system-xfree86
...

Hrmm. Bit of a puzzler...
