Thanks for the info. I followed those instructions, i.e.

fink selfupdate
fink selfupdate-rsync
fink index -f
fink selfupdate

followed by

fink install tetex-base

This time, instead of bombing out right at the beginning, it went
through a huge amount of stuff, so I was optimistic, but unfortunately
it failed at the end with:

Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
Failed: can't install package tetex-base-3.0-1006

I would be willing to wipe out /sw and start from scratch if you think
this would solve the problem.
