I looked over the messages generated on the screen the last time I tried
to install tetex-base. I find the following:

###############################################################################
fmtutil: Error! Not all formats have been built successfully.
Visit the log files in directory
   /sw/var/lib/texmf/web2c
for details.
###############################################################################

I looked at the mentioned log files. In lambda.log, latex.log, and
pdflatex.log I find

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! You are attempting to make a LaTeX format from a source file
! That is more than five years old.
!
! If you enter <return> to scroll past this message then the format
! will be built, but please consider obtaining newer source files
! before continuing to build LaTeX.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't find any other error messages.

Best wishes,
