You *must* specify a window manager. You can choose Apple's
(quartz-wm) or something else (enlightenment which is my favourite is
available, not sure about others; also see below).

I am using an .xinitrc (I know that this is not the proper way of
doing things but it is working for me and if it ain't broken I am not
fixing it) that looks like this:

    # make sure X11 is Fink, /usr/local, etc. aware
    source ~/.profile

    # Pick your window manager
    # quartz-wm &
    # metacity &
    e16 &

    exec gnome-session

You probably want of course to follow Dr. Hansen's suggestion as to
the proper replacement of .xinitrc...

That's what I get too when I run gnome-panel instead of gnome-session.
I am guessing that some components are missing. Strangely enough,
after launching gnome-settings-daemon from the terminal it then goes
on and runs smoothly.

Where did I get gnome-session you ask? It is in bundle-gnome which I
have transferred from the 10.4 tree as per the instructions fount at
<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.macosx.fink.user/34590>. Turns out
to be a mostly painless experience. I have documented it at
<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.gnome/2622> (I apologize
by the way for the adverb in the subject, which was meant to be an
adjective...).

In the meantime other packages have made their way in the 10.7 tree,
so the only missing packages right now are

    bundle-gnome.info
    control-center.info
    dasher.info
    gnome-speech.info
    metacity-setup.info
    metacity.info
    xscreensaver.info

I have also eliminated the dependency of bundle-gnome on gpdf
(replacing it with evince) since gpdf is not working anyway (even if
it builds fine) and is as far as I know obsolete.

A possible necessity is libungif.info, I am not sure but I must have
needed it at some point for some reason (since it is in my local
tree). Now however it has been removed from my system so it is
probably not needed anymore.

I presume that all of these too will make their way into the 10.7 tree
but you can easily add them locally right now as per the
aforementioned posts. Let me know if you need further help and I will
be happy to elaborate.

The result is completely satisfactory. I ran metacity as my window
manager (which is what you get once you have the whole bundle-gnome if
the window manager is misisng from .xinitrc or equivalent) for a short
time and it appeared to work well. I have also tried quartz-wm (also
works well, but in my opinion is not well integrated into the Gnome
desktop). I eventually switched to enlightenment (my favourite as I
mentioned above) and I have never looked back since.

This is probably caused by the lack of Gnome components in the current
10.7 tree (happened to me too).

I hope this helps. Do let me know if more information is needed.

Cheers,
Stefan
