Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I found out that gnome-themes must be a
dependency of metacity (which refuses to run without it).  Could this
be the reason of the crash?

I presume that this is also a needed dependency in the 10.4 tree but I
would not know as I no longer run anything below 10.7.
