Try pulling all the bulbs and try again. If it still dies, its definately a
short and not a draw problem. If thats the case, my best luck has been a good
shop light, a screwdriver, and visualise every inch of the wire, plugs and
switches. A volt meter at this point is only going to confirm a short, not tell
you where it is. Just out of curiosity, does it die when you turn on the
hazards? that might further help you narrow down the location of the short. If
it doesn't die with the hazards, the short will be up under the dash and not
downstream somewhere.

I think you need to do a bit of troubleshooting with a volt meter and a helper.
You can look at the wiring diagrams here:
http://www.bafb.org/1968firebird.org/index.html

I would start with the engine off and turn the ignition to the run
mode and put the meter on the + side of the ignition coil. You should
see about 8-12 volts there (depending on wheather the points happen
to be closed or not).

Then have your helper step on the brake peddal and see if that
voltage changes (it may drop a bit but it should not be more than
maybe 1-2 volts).

If it drops more than that, then you have to work your way back to
the K connector (I'm looking at the 1968 diagram) on the firewall and
check there and then work your way into the fuse box and then to the
ignition switch.

One quick and dirty thing you can do is to start the car and make a
"hot wire" from the + side of the battery to the + side of the coil
(you don't want to run this way for too long) and press on the brake
and see what happens. If the car doesn't die means that you have some
issue up the harness towards the ignition key as I mentioned above.

Good luck

Hugo
