I think that all Firebirds up to 69 had some kind of open-air ventilation at
the filler neck area (not sure about the California models though).

My 69 came with a non-vented cap, but instead it had a small vent tube
attached to the filler neck which exited behind the bumper.

If there are no other provisions for equalizing the pressure in the tank, I
would assume a vented cap would be the right choice.

>From the early 70s,the emissions laws made it mandatory to have a closed
system for recirculating the gas fumes to the engine via a charcoal filter,
which meant no more vented caps.

Howevever, there will always be some pressure-buildup in the tank, just like
the rediator cap it will take a certain pressure before it releases the air.
