The '68 owner's manual recommends a non-vented cap for all Firebird applications, so the pressure being released should be expected. I didn't get that pressure build-up with my old locking cap, but I do with the new one. Vented caps release the pressure once it increases beyond some predetermined level.

I have a regular non-locking cap on my 68 400.  I think its non-vented because every time I go to fill up 
there is a sudden release of air (gas)pressure when I open it up.  Not to ask a "dumb question", 
but what type of cap is preferable and what are the issues between "vented" vs. 
"non-vented"?
