Dan,

did you install the lower portion of the tube ? it's the piece that is curved and goes through the windage tray ?

i have alway installed my outer tube from the top. sometime i heat up the end with a torch to soften it up before sliding it in.

anyhow,

all those pieces kind have to go in at the same time when the engine is assembled.

the tube goes into the block, then the bent internal tube slides into it.

if you have the the lower/bent/internal tube in, you MAY be able to install the outer tube (hopefully they are able to 'nest' into each other.)

another option...

one engine i put together had main cap supports so i could not use the windage tray.

i installed the outer tube like normal,

inserted the dipstick and made a mark/scratch where "full" was a ran with it..

hope that helps

Subject: [FGF] 400 RA III dipstick missing - ideas?

.........................................................................

When I bought my 69, the 400 motor dipstick tube was installed, but the dipstick itself was missing. It didn't trouble me -- during a 45 minute test drive, the car exhaust was completely clean and the motor was strong. Also, I have original paper describing a recent rebuild. (My faith has been rewarded with 6000 trouble-free miles.)

I bought a replacement, but the dipstick did not reach into the pan. I thought I bought the wrong replacement, so I went to a different dealer and bought another one -- it was the same as the first.

I started calling around trying to figure out what was going on. I reached a parts dealer in New Hampshire who told me that I'd have to pull the engine to install the dipstick tube from underneath. In my neck of the woods, this would cost $800.00. I don't have the ability to handle this myself.

A welder told me he could make me a longer stick that would reach into the pan -- but the welded stick snapped after two days. Fortunately we were able to get all the pieces out of the pan and the car has run about 1500 miles since then without a problem. But I still have no dipstick.

Anyone out there been through this before? Any ideas?

Thanks,

DOB
