The problem you are describing is the reason a lot of people wire in a Ford starter relay.

Just replace the word 'Chevy' with the word 'Pontiac'.

P.S. Brake cleaner can melt wire insulation, remove paint, can cause a fire, etc.

I have the same problem and suspect the heat buildup in the starter. I now try to plan my trips so that there's one stop at the beginning for the gas, a long stop at the destination and then I'm ok when I have to go back.

Now I have a theory; I haven't needed this yet so I don't know if this works, but I also have a can of brake cleaner in the trunk. Whenever I have this problem again I'll try to spray lots of cleaner on the starter solenoid to cool it - It does feel a bit silly because I should just fix the starter problem but it's not 'tooling weather' yet....
