Thanks for the help guys. I use a compressor for my "toys" a couple of  
evenings a week and sometimes on Saturday. What I'm hearing here is that I'd be 
 
better off to pass on the $500 range units and buy a bigger one. I like the 
idea 
 of a two-stage compressor but it will postpone my purchase and my progress. 
I  definitely want a case iron pump versus the aluminum pump with sleeves. For 
a  hobby guy like myself, should the one-stage vs. two-stage be a determining 
 factor?

In  the end, I went with a Craftsman 80-gallon, 5.5 hp, dual stage, cast iron 
pump  for about $850. The Ingersol with the same specs is suppose to be a 
little  better quality but I have not had any issues with mine and Sears has 
never let  me down on service. I had a 60-gallon with aluminum pump and had 
lots 
of  problems with the head gasket. Sears let me "grade-up" to the 80-gallon 
since  I did it within the 3-month satisfaction guarantee period. If you are 
painting  your car, you will need the 80-gal/5+ hp.
