I went with a Lowes Kobalt 2- stage unit for $900 or so. Pay attention to
two specs - the amp draw of the motor (I believe each horsepower requires
about 4 to 5 amps...a 16 amp motor is NOT a 5 horse motor), and (most
importantly) the CFM capability...tank size is almost irrelevant.

Hi Guys,
I saw discussion of air compressors some time back but I wasn't in the
market then. I need some input. Are the 60 and 80 gallon Ingersoll-Rand,
Campbell-Hausfeld, Sears, etc compressors in the $500.00 price range a
wise choice?
What is the difference in the 1-stage and 2-stage units? From what I have
seen
and heard, the cast iron pump is preferable to the aluminum pump with
sleeves. I'm doing a good bit of work, in the evenings and weekends,
using a cut-off
saw, small grinder, spot sandblasting, and some primer and paint
spraying.
My 25-gallon Craftsman compressor just isn't cut out for work like this.
