First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Yes, you really DO want a true Pontiac powerplant under the hood of your Bird, not some knock-off GM crate motor. :)

When I get to the engine stage of my project, I hope to find a 455 motor to rebuild and save the 400 I have now since it is original to the car. I have a set of 670 heads already and a local guy has some 6X heads available. I like the numbers of the 041 cam w/ 1.65 rockers but a 455 can handle more than that, especially with a 4-speed. My car will be my "toy" and I won't be driving it regularly so I can stand to be a little wild on the cam. I've considered a crate motor also but none of the options are cheap. The GM Performance crate motors make a ton of power for the money but I really want a true Pontiac powerplant under the hood. Keep us posted on the outcome. I thought it was no brainer at first since with the extra $350 for the crank but I've found there are some other expenses. The rebuild kit itself is about $75 more. The big extra is the heads. You most likely will need different heads to get the compression you want unless you have low compression heads on your 400 now. Cam and carb selection changes as well. Bottom line, I've had to buy everything new even with some old parts that were still in perfect condition, e.g. 750 Holley, etc. I talked with Butler again today. The Ross were $600 w/a 4 week lead time (have to be custom made). The TRW/FM were $400 w/a 4 week lead time as well so I went with the TRW/FM's. I've been surprised to see how difficult it is to get standard 455 pistons. It makes since considering most guys rebuilding a 455 are boring 30 over, etc. Sheen> .........................................................................> It sounds like your cylinders can still be brought up to exact specs for > either piston you choose.
