First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Thanks, Chris! Basic is great. I'll never learn how to troubleshoot a problem like this if all I have are advanced instructions somebody with some knowledge of this problem would use to fix it.

David, Use a voltmeter or test light to troubleshoot this problem. First, ground the test light to the chassis and check for power at the fuse block under the dash. If you have nothing there, go start at the beginning to see where the problem is. Use the light to see if you are getting power at the cable ends that are attached to the battery to be sure corrosion is not preventing a connection between the cable and the post. Next, use the engine as a ground and check power at the positive cable end of the battery, which will test the ground from the battery to the engine. If this is bad (no light), fix the ground. Move the ground to the body to test the ground strap from the engine to the frame/body. If everything is good, test for power at the starter solenoid. If you have power there but not at the fuse block, check the fusible links next. The links look like wires that are attached to the same post as the positive cable from the battery. To check the link, dig the test light into each wire past where the fusible link starts. No light = the problem you're having. Replace the link with a link of the same amperage. If all wires have power, then check the connection where the engine harness goes through the firewall for corrosion, melted wires, or any other signs of nastiness. If all looks well there, test for power on the inside wiring harness where it comes through the firewall. If the firewall connection is good, you should have power on this wire. If not, the problem lies in the fuse block itself. Yank it and look for melted wires, corrosion, etc. This troubleshooting is probably overkill, but it will tell you exactly where the problem is. You can skip some steps, and go backwards from there if you like. For example, if you have power at the battery cables, and you notice your harness connection at the firewall looks loose, go straight there and test for power. If you have power there, the problem is in the connection itself or the fuse block. If not, go back to the fusible links. Sorry if I have made this too basic. Chris R. 69 Conv 3350 69 Conv 350HO www.chrisandchristi.com First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ........................................................................ . Hey, guys! I have a 68 that won't start. The battery is fully charged, but it seems like no power is getting past it (for example, the dome light doesn't come on when I open the door). I'm not the best at working out electrical system problems. Any advice you can give me as to how to get my 'bird running again will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
