Usually a piece of 2x4 and a hammer will drive it on without any damage. I
cant see you damaging the thrust bearing.

The manual says install using a suitable instrument. Are they referring to
a hammer? I wouldn't want to bang on it considering that would mean
banging on the thrust bearing. I have it on but its not on deep enough to
get any threads started to suck it down into place. I tried a couple of
stores for a longer bolt but 5/8"-16 bolt is hard to come by. Any ideas?
