Cheers for the input.

My thoughts (although prob wrong!)

We got the '48 4 years ago non runner it looks quite cool rust / patina
look that I want to keep, and it had had a 50's strato streak dropped
in.

We have had it running but not for long as a core plug is rusted out.

The big ol' V* seems a bit too heavy and it had 2 broken leaf springs on
the front.

The idea being the original engine for the truck would be a straight 6?
So the OHC would match it for weight but have a bit more HP (not sure on
torque figures) and also I like the idea of popping the hood on the ol'
shed and seing a trick OHC under there. Coupled with duel exhausts for a
half decent sound I though it might be a good compramise?

I also have the benefit of a spare engine for our 55 Starchief (sitting
awaiting work!)

If the OHC is too underpowered we have a Pontiac 350 sitting around
looking lonely.

Any more ideas / advice greatfully received.

Ed

ed,
my .02.
price seems right. I have a 67 conv with 4bbl OHC I'm putting back
together.
67-9 birds with a 326-455 V8 are plentiful at car shows. If you really
want to turn heads pop the hood on a Sprint bird.
I drove mine for a few years before tearing into it (got tired of the
oil
leaks) and was a hoot to drive the high RPM sprint.

I'm unsure how the 250ci sprint motor will perform in your 48 as they
are designed for revving to 6500 rpm and am concerned with the lack of
low-end torque you may require. you are moving an extra 500 pounds of
truck versus the bird. transmission ratios and rear-end gearing would be
critical. I would encourage additional research prior to investing the
time / $. you might consider a mid 50's large-bore bowtie six (292 ?)
with carb, cam and manifold mods as a bolt-in option. just a thought.

.
It is the four barrel carb so the high compression engine.

I spoke to the guy last night and done a deal for approx. $650 for

The engine complete with all ancillaries and 4 speed saginaw box (good
working order incl clutch, flywheel etc)
Stainless steel duel exhaust system
68 Firebird rear axle with springs etc
Brand new repro hood tach in box

I don't think it is a bad deal?

The engine is destined for the 48 GMC pick up, the hood tach for my
firebird and I plan on tripping over the spare axle and springs in my
garage for quite some time!
