I'm not sure if every 400 had disk brakes but if it has original disks that's
probably a helpful sign it's original.  If it has AC it should have those X
pans as well as a lower "fill in" sheet metal pan behind the bottom front
valance (the piece the license plate holder attaches to).  There were also some
rubbery panels between the grill area and the radiator support to funnel air to
the radiator.

If the paint is that old it would mean any cloning would have to have been done
before it was painted.  In 83 it wasn't really a "classic" yet so it seems very
unlikely to me that anyone would have bothered to clone a 400 back then, there
should have still been quite a few real ones out on the street to buy.  I'd be
really surprised if it's not what he claims.

Subject: [FGF] 400 or not?

First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List
.........................................................................
HI All....
Don't want to jinx things but I am going to look at a 69 400/400 this weekend.
Having never had one and am not going to have time to do a historical search,
am asking what the sure fire signs are that it is not cloned.  I know the 400's
had the front "x" pans on the rad support, 400 on the left side of the trunk
lid, of course the 400 hood, the pontiac symbol on the bumper.  He says it is
an original car even down to the carb and distributor, 66000 miles, he has had
the car since 1976 with only 1 repaint in 1983.  Going to search our first gen
website for codes and such, but would appreciate the help from the experts here.
