Someone mentioned the PHS which stands for Pontiac Historical Services. You
only need the vin#, and they will send the sales sheet showing PMD's sale to
the dealership. This microfish sheet will show the original options that the
car had so you can match all of them if you wish. You can fake a vin, but that
is pretty unlikely. The vin is probably also on the frame, but it will be hard
to see. You can also match the vin to an original block and to the original
transmission so do that if you can.

The indicators that others have mentioned should make you feel better also.

In addition to the heads, block, etc that has been mentioned, I encourage you
to match the carb part number and build date because some of them are hard to
find (if you care about this). You might also see if you can find a couple of
pictures of original carbs because these can be restamped, but it has probably
not been faked.

I don't know how far you want to go with this, but alternators, voltage
regulators, and master cylinders can be found or have been reproduced. (John
Prikle has thousands of alternators/voltage regulators that he restores, and I
got one of each for my 68 400--right part numbers and good date codes.)

Good luck. This sounds like a nice car.
