First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Regarding getting the handle out of the shifter bracket, Hurst recommends sticking a thin blade or the like down the shifter shaft to depress the shims so the handle will come out. This does work, but you have to apply a little more force than Hurst leads you to believe is necessary.

Original factory shifter bodies generally have the numbers 3138 in the back of them. This means that it is a shifter without stop bolts. (Hurst Competition Plus shifters with stop bolts are generally aftermarket shifters.) If you remove the stick, I have read that the stick number for a 68 Firebird 4-speed with a M-20 Muncie is 5325 which will be exposed when the stick is removed. (You'll need a tool--forget exactly what to remove it.) The 3138 body and 5325 stick should work even if the date code of the shifter is too early or late. (You may not need to remove the stick if it works ok when installed and you have a 3138 shifter body.) If you read thru the attached link, you will see the restored shifter for my Judge in post #12: http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/showthread.php?t=381026&highlight=shifter+date+code 1968-69 GTO's apparently use a different shifter stick which is #5324 if I remember correctly. You may want to also note the correct shifter rods as there are aftermarket rods that are different. As noted in the thread above, these shifters should also have date codes and batch numbers printed on the same line (Hurst numbers as you describe them as there are no GM numbers on these shifters.) They are somewhat difficult to understand, but not impossible. I suggest that if you still have questions to call Pete Serio at Precision Pontiac. Pete is the authority on these. He restored my shifter and may have what you need if you do not. Others sell shifters that are cleaned up, but Pete sells restored shifters with all parts replated properly. He is the best there is. --- On Sun, 1/3/10, Dan Dominick <[email protected]> wrote: > > Does anyone know what the original Hurst shifter looked > like for 68 Munice 4 speeds (on a 400 HO)?
