A little more on PUI deluxe seat covers versus the real thing. I bought
a deluxe set from PUI about 8 years ago for my 68 bird. The problem was
that the red madrid grain side vinyl wasn't a good color match to the
original. So as Brett said, I then bought the real comfortweave from SMS.
The
truth is that the comfortweave material from PUI was actually a pretty close
weave to that from SMS. Only a side by side comparison would be the tip
off for most people. The bigger issue was the way PUI had sewn the seat
covers. I examined the covers carefully from the inside and they had sewn the
comfortweave seams in a different method than GM did. I have my original
GM seat covers and they appear to be sewn in a better method. The PUI
covers would probably hold up fine in the gentle environment we give them
today, but I'm not sure they would hold up to every day use they would have
seen
years ago. Anyway, I still have the set of PUI covers. I'm trying to
decide if I should just sell them, or use them for now and later on have the
real comfortweave set sewn up. I did install just the top seat cover on the
back fold down rear seat and it fit well on there. One other issue I
noticed is that the comfortweave has seams that run vertically in all of the
seats that are approximately 2" apart. On the seat covers from PUI, they
did not space them perfectly evenly. I would say that the spacings vary by
up to 3/16". You don't really notice it unless you take a close look. When
you compare them to my original GM seat covers, you again notice the
difference.

Regards,
Old Joe

Hi Rick, there are quite a few different companies out there,
and with in many parts companies they will sell multiple brands.
The best by far is PUI. So who ever you choose to purchase through,
just make sure you specifically request PUI and make sure that's
what they sell etc.

Most all of the comfortweave on the market today is a pressed weave
pattern, (in the last few years a few have gotten better) but the
originals as you can see on yours truly looks woven. As Joe can attest
there is a company in OR: http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ they carry
original fabrics including the original comfortweave. Joe bought some
of the last available in Red, but they should have more in Black so
IF, you wanted to go that route, you could have the inserts redone
correctly etc...

Hi All...
Thx so far for the help on the other parts I mentioned. Now for the
interior.
I am wanting to get new seat covers for the 69 400 with the deluxe
interior. i have heard that the original comfort weave material is no longer
available.
I have looked at the major suppliers and it seems that they are all
similar in appearence. I have to think that one company makes them and sells
them to the parts companies?
Anyways, good, bad, or ugly, all comments would be appreciated on where
you bought them, ease of installation, quality, and overall satisfaction or
disappointment.
thx again
Rick
