Thanks, Hernan, I just tried solution #2, turning off firewall and scanning software. That simple basic thing that I should've thought of in the first place, solved the problem, first on my new clean profile and then on my old full-of-other-stuff profile. I did not do 1, 3, or 4. The easiest thing you suggested worked. Thanks. Too bad Firefox and Firebug didn't do an error msg. Maybe I would've thought of your #2 on my own if either of them did.
