The indication that Firebug is minimized (and not deactivated) is the colored Start Button <https://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Start_Button>while the UI is not shown. Try out the button I showed you before for both cases, Firebug detached and attached, and compare it with the behavior of closing the detached Firebug window and you'll see what I mean.
Btw. while there is no status bar in Firefox anymore in current Firefox versions there is an add-on bar fulfilling the same purpose.
