After about 5 months of contracting, here are a few of my own thoughts:

Setting an hourly rate is really tricky!  A good way to start is to take
you
current salary, add about 25% for benefits, and divide to get an hourly
rate.  Also keep in mind that an hour of contract work is more intense
than
an hour of salaried work because you can't charge for things that aren't
directly related to the project.  So I've found that even doing 40 hours
of
billable work in a week is pretty tough.

The price I charge per hour varies slightly from job to job based on a
number of variables, such as how much I want the job, and how difficult it
sounds.  Some people have told me my rate is incredibly low, while others
have said it's too high.  (Usually the people who say it's too high are
not
from the Bay Area!)  Ideally I would like to be charging about 30% more
than
I do right now, but I have chosen to stick with a lower rate because I
want
to get some good jobs under my belt that I can use to build my portfolio
and
reputation.
