Hmmmm...that's odd.  I'm seeing absolutely zero effect on my GF2MX200 w/24bpp.
Which CPU and what depth level are you running?

At some point we really ought to have a video profile routine on startup (or
one time anyway) to build a set of defaults per system for all the nice opengl
features being used.  It'd be a shame to hide the good stuff from new users
with overly conservative defaults.
