There are a lot of variables that can affect frame rate.  The amount of video
memory available is one of them.  Within flightgear the type of aircraft and
it's detail make some difference.  You'll also see a drop (as I do) when the
downtown area is within the view frustrum.

If you want to compare notes with others you might want to specify your
hardware and specific aircraft and view locations and directions.  At startup
with the aircraft sitting on the threshold you will notice changes in frame
rate by changing the view direction to the right and left.

Judging by the numbers I take it you are not running a GFX5800 on a 3Ghz P4. 
If you are, something is _really_ wrong :-)
